An orthopaedic surgeon will remove the damaged components of the hip joint and replace them with new, artificial components during hip replacement surgery, also known as hip arthroplasty. These synthetic components replicate how the human hip joint works. One of the largest joints in the body, the hip joint is a ball and socket joint. The joint is formed when the upper end of the femur (hip bone) joins the pelvis (thigh bone). The "socket" (the acetabulum) in the pelvis accommodates the "ball" (the femoral head) at the end of the femur. The hip joint's diseased or damaged bone and cartilage are taken out during a hip replacement by making an incision over the side of the thigh. The surgeon next inserts new, prosthetic pieces into the acetabulum and femoral head. In order to reduce damage to the soft tissues and bone, surgeons attempt to replace the hip with the smallest incision possible.
